Windows 10 File Explorer Hangs? What Happened & Here’s Why

Windows Explorer is the built-in file manager in Windows operating systems.  Usually, it is used to display all the files saved in the local and external hard drives. Fix 1. Restart File Explorer from Task Manager #

Usually, the easiest way to remove Windows 10 File Explorer not responding error is to restart the process from the Task Manager. Here is how you can do this:

Step 1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to start Task Manager. Also, you can right-click on the taskbar and go to Task Manager.

Step 2. Under the Processes tab, navigate to Windows Explorer, right-click on it and choose End task.

Fix 2. Restart File Explorer from CMD #

Windows File Explorer is not responding, another way to manually restart Windows Explorer is to apply the command prompt. This is also very easy to do:

Step 1. From Windows Search, type CMD and run it with Administrator privilege.

Step 2. Input this command and press Enter to end the Windows Explorer process: taskkill /f /im explorer.

Step 3. To restart the Windows Explorer.exe process, input start explorer.exe in the windows and press Enter.

Fix 3. Run System File Checker #

System File Checker (SFC) helps to scan for and fix corrupted system files. If your Windows 10 File Explorer is not responding, you can have a try on the system file checker.

Step 1. Also, search for CMD and run it as administrator.

Step 2. From the command prompt window, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. The whole process will take you some time. If you are prompted to restart your computer, save the editing files and end the other running programs before you restart your computer. Step 1.  go to Windows 10 Control Panel, view by Large Icons, and go to File Explorer Options.

Fix 5. Update Windows 10 to the Latest #
